             abstract = "This work present the mapping and characterization of vegetation 
                         cover and use of land in the watershed of S{\~a}o Francisco, the 
                         methodological procedures used in preparing the map and 
                         descriptions of the classes of the legend of vegetation. The image 
                         used was satellite Landsat 7 ETM +, with its colorful compositions 
                         in the bands RGB/543 and RGB/453. In addition to the steps of 
                         pre-processing was used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index - 
                         NDVI to separate vegetation above the ground and determine the 
                         density of vegetation cover classes of mapping. Noted the 
                         predominance of vegetation cover Savanna with 33% of the area, the 
                         steppe Savannas by 26% and a significant area of contact with the 
                         steppe-like Savannas seasonal forest, the order of 4%. During the 
                         implementation of the work were detected several environmental 
                         problems in different physiographic regions of the basin, 
                         especially the deforestation, mainly the gallery forest, the fires 
                         on a large scale, the inappropriate use and occupancy of land, and 
                         the release of untreated sewage directly into the river.",
